Those who still doubt electric cars are taking over, Porsche is about to make you a beliEVer. They just announced that their next generation Macan will be reconceptualised as a fully-electric series of vehicle. That’s right, no petrol engines, no diesel engines just electric and nothing else.
This is all part of Porsche’s shift towards greater electromobility. They’re already committed to a number of all-electric car projects including the Taycan, Taycan Cross Turismo and the Mission E.
This announcement is actually a pretty big one and could gradually show where the company is headed. The ‘Macan’ name was only introduced in 2014. It has no real historical baggage attached to it, besides being one of the company’s best selling vehicles. Perhaps next Porsche will take the Cayenne and Panamera all-electric. Whether the 911 and 718 models will be spared this fate is anyone’s guess.
Porsche AG will be investing more than 6 billion euros into electromobility by 2022. The early 2020s is likely when we’ll see this new electric Macan. It’ll be built on the Premium Platform Electric architecture which Porsche co-developed with Audi.
