0Transport Ministry Steps in to Solve the Takata Airbag Replacement Problem
After the 7th Malaysian victim of Takata’s faulty airbag inflators passed, the new government has finally given us an effective solution to the problem. The biggest problem used to be the availability of replacement parts. But Honda Malaysia and the other car brands involved have long since stocked up. The real problem now is finding CURRENT owners of the affected cars. This is especially a problem with cars that have not been properly transferred, or when owners change their mailing address, and even with STOLEN cars that are being used. My uncle is personally going through that situation right now. He still receives recall letters for his Accord which was stolen more than 5 years ago.
So, yes, this new solution from the Transport Ministry – we hope it will work. Basically, the cars involved will not be able to renew their road tax until the inflator replacement has been done. Starting today (4th June 2018), all 71,315 of the 332,358 Honda vehicles involved will need to obtain a certificate from their respective car dealership to prove the replacement has been made.
For those worried, about the inconvenience, please note that this replacement is entirely free. And also, please watch the below video to see just how serious this issue is.
The latest victim was 23 year old Pong Hou Tien, who was killed when a 2cm piece of metal shot into his neck when he crashed his 2004 Honda City last Sunday.
