What Happened to the Mercedes R-Class?

Once a favorite with the super rich Malaysians who needed a 7-seater with load of attitude, the R-Class has somewhat disappeared from the Mercedes Benz product lineup. Today you can buy a used 2007 model R350 for as little as RM55,000.

The R-Class was launched in 2006 and was sold until 2013, when it was withdrawn from almost every international market due to slow sales. There is no information on a next generation model and it is still in production, but only for the Chinese market. It is still being built in North America in the state of Indiana.

The R-Class was not a major sales success in almost all its markets despite the variety of models offered, AMG included, and was withdrawn in 2013 after a 2010 facelift failed to maintain sufficient consumer attention.

The departure of the R-Class from the company’s lineup left a hole in terms of size and utility, with only the GLE and the GLS offering similar amounts of room. We look forward to an all new model that might come after someone in Mercedes-Benz product planning department reads this article.
