Experience the Hilux and Fortuner at Toyota’s Drive Uncompromised Event

Right outside of MAEPS, Toyota are showing off the off-roading prowess of their newly updated Hilux and Fortuner models in their ‘Drive Uncompromised’ Test Drive Event.

We got to see first hand some of the advantages these vehicles have.

The first stop was the Active Traction Control Ramp. This showed us how having the highest wheel articulation was advantageous in situations where one of the vehicle’s wheels were lifted off the ground or pushed up against its body.

This section also featured rollers, which took traction away from select wheels. By applying the throttle a little more, the Active Traction Control automatically sent power to the wheels with the most grip, sending the car forward.

Even on the 35-degree double sided slope with opposing wheels off the ground, the A-TRC was able to intelligently resolve the situation.

Worked just as well on both the Hilux and Fortuner.

They then sent the Fortuner up an extremely steep climb. Without much of  a push, it made it to the top. Following that, Downhill Assist Control was used to bring the vehicle down an equally steep descent at a controlled speed.

We even got to experience the Hilux off road.

Needless to say, it was a blast. The Hilux was unstoppable over the extremely loose mud, and its Hill-Start Assist Control feature kept the pickup in place for 3 seconds after removing pressure from the brake pedal.

In terms of what’s new with these cars, the Fortuner comes with new 2.4 VRZ 4X4 and 4X2 models. The Hilux 2.8G was upgraded with Downhill Assist Control (DAC) to make descents a lot smoother. This variant also gets LED front foglamps, automatic climate control, cruise control, and additioal air conditioning vents that help with cooling the rear passenger compartment.

Some variants of both the Fortuner and Harrier now have two USB charging ports (2.1A) in addition to the existing 12V power outlets. It also comes with 7 SRS airbags now.

In addition, the 2.4G MT variant now has Vehicle Stability Control, Hill-start Assist Control, Trailer Sway Control as well as Emergency Stop Signal. Experience it yourself at MAEPS this weekend.
