Volvo S90 T6 Review: 6 Reasons To Choose the T6 over the T8

There is a great gamble that comes with selling premium cars in Malaysia. When a new model is launched, the initial batch of cars sold will likely be fully imported. CKD operations usually commence about 6-12 months later. With the S90, it’s the same story.

Just this week, Volvo Car Malaysia announced that bookings for the CKD S90 T8 were open. But with showrooms still selling the T6 variant, customers will have to ask themselves whether or not to bother with it. Especially since the T6 has less power, cost more and doesn’t come with the really fancy ‘Inscription’ trim.

In our opinion, the S90 T6 still has a lot going for it. Firstly, to many Volvo fans, having a car that’s built completely in Volvo’s Torslanda plant is important. Important enough to justify spending a little bit extra for the bragging rights.

Secondly, it doesn’t have a hybrid powertrain. Yes, the hybrid powertrain in the T8 model is amazing. It’s more powerful AND more efficient. On top of an electric motor, the T8 model will still have the same turbo+supercharged 2-litre direct injection engine as the T6 does. But a hybrid system isn’t for everyone. Many Volvo owners buy the car to own FOREVER. Look at the number of single-owner Volvos in Malaysia and you’ll understand what we mean. Now, if you intend to own a car for the entirety of its lifespan, having a simpler powertrain with fewer components will mean lower cost of ownership over a decade or two.

Thirdly, is the R-Design kit. The T6 that’s sold here gets the very sporty R-Design kit instead of the Momentum trim (on the T5) and the Inscription trim (on the upcoming T8). While the Inscription trim is definitely a more upmarket look, it lacks the sportiness that the R-Design offers. What’s more, there’s carbon fibre trim on the inside.

Fourth, the T8 doesn’t have a wagon variant. Volvo makes some of the best looking wagons in the industry. The T6 is available as a wagon and as a sedan. The T8 only comes as a sedan because it is locally assembled.


Fifth, the T6 is just more suited for performance. It’s not just the way it looks, but the tuned chassis and suspension. The AWD system, body kit, and beautiful Nubuck+Perforated Nappa Leather bucket seats are the icing on the sporty cake. The T8 may have more power, but this is the car you want to drive hard.

Finally, resale value. Yes, when talking about premium cars, resale value is a rather silly topic. But it still affects the total cost of ownership. The T6 will be the rarer car. It will be more sought after in ten years. We’re sure it’ll do better in the used market.
