Engines are complicated, wasteful things. Even a relatively efficient petrol engine wastes about 70% of the energy content of the fuel it burns. So while the rest of the world figures out more efficient, sustainable alternative powertrains, Mazda has taken it upon themselves to improve aspects of the existing technology.
Their latest effort – Skyactiv-X marries a number of technologies to create an internal combustion engine like no other. It’s pretty revolutionary – perhaps as revolutionary as variable valve timing or fuel injection. Yes, it adds complexity, but it’s pretty incredible what they’ve achieved.
