The D-Max performs exactly as you would expect a D-Max to perform. With a fuss and great relaibility with from and function of a class best pickup truck. This new model was definitely more refined than the outgoing D-Max, with the new 2.5 litre diesel engine and a variable geometry turbocharger offering a more competitive amount of power than the previous models. To satisfy the lifestyle crowd, the higher end variants of the D-Max come with things like a premium audio system with surround sound, which is hardly found even in todays average family car, let alone in the pickup truck. Suspension damping remains slightly on the stiff side, although this could be done to compensate for potential heavy loads in the truck bed of the D-Max. Steering is a little vague and unresponsive, but this is par for the course when it comes to pickup trucks and it’s hard to fault the D-Max for it as most other follow the same trend…its a pickup thing!
After driving the older D-Max model, it was quickly obvious that this D-Max is now smoother and more effortless power delivery makes the new D-Max far more pleasing to drive. The older model was capable of a brisk turn of speed if gently coaxed, but it is quickly out of ideas when driven hard. Overtaking on trunk roads was certainly not its forte, and in such situations, this D-Max’s added firepower, which is also delivered quicker, comes in very handy, allowing you to pass slower traffic without fuss.
The 5-speed gearbox has good spacing of ratios and smoothness in operation. Off-roading is where the D-Max really shines, handling treacherous mud and sand terrain with great composure. Its new 4×4 system allows you switch between two and four-wheel modes at just a twist of a knob.
The D-Max’s great mechanical ruggedness and not to mention various intangible qualities associated with the Isuzu brand which concentrates all its research and development on trucks of various sizes make it a very attractive ownership preposition. It must be said that this D-Max’s arrival was timely. As rivals get increasingly more powerful, Isuzu chose just the right time to up its game and swing the balance of power firmly in its favour once again.
