You Win an RM100K Voucher for a Crossover, which do you pick?

Let’s face it, just about every new car buyer wants an SUV. But at RM100,000, you’re going to have to make do with Crossovers. Now, there’s a lot of debate over what the difference is. Some say there isn’t a difference. But for simplicity’s sake, ‘Crossover’ in this context is a car that’s jacked up to have the physical characteristics of an SUV, with none or little off-roading prowess.

So let’s say a voucher for an RM100,000 crossover drops on your lap, which showrooms do you visit? Here are four of our favourites.

Ford EcoSport 1.5 Titanium

The EcoSport may not be very popular, but it’s one of the few crossovers that’s equipped for a little fun with friends. You get auxiliary power sockets in the rear to charge your devices while camping, there’s a sunroof that opens things up inside and a chilled glovebox to keep your refreshments cool.

It’s the kind of car for those who like a little recreation with friends or family on weekends. Plus, at this price, it’s the only entry here with 7 airbags.

Honda HR-V 1.8S

The HR-V was Honda’s runaway success in 2015 and it still continues to be the number one choice for many in 2017. The package here is unbeatable. Japanese reliability and ease of ownership, plus a little Honda magic on the inside.

The boot is bigger, more flexible and easier to load in and out of. It’s also still a modern, edgy looking vehicle and comes in as the best all-rounder. In fact, we’re prepared to say that the HR-V best represents this segment of cars. Not because of how popular it is, but how well it balances every aspect.

Mitsubishi ASX 2WD 2.0 GL

This might be a bit of a surprise for you, but the ASX is actually a whole segment larger than the other vehicles on the list. Sure, this base model won’t get you much in the way of kit, but if you really need the space, the ASX has you covered.

It has the longest wheelbase, which translates to better comfort and leg space for all. It’s also got the best suspension here. While the other crossovers on the list compromise with a torsion beam, Mitsubishi have multi-link independent rear suspension on the ASX. It may be down on features, but fundamentally, it is a more complete vehicle.

Renault Captur 1.2 TCe

The Captur is the latest addition, as it is now locally assembled and qualified for EEV certification. At RM109K, it’s the most expensive one here. BUT, if you hurry and take advantage of the RM11,000 early bird discount, it’s also the most affordable! Plus, the Captur is without a doubt the most technologically advanced SUV on the list.

The 1.2-litre turbocharged engine and Efficient Dual Clutch transmission makes the Captur more powerful AND more fuel efficient than the rest. The interior is full of quirky little features like removable seat covers and hidden storage compartments. All in all, it’s a fun little runabout vehicle with a lot of personality and really good looks.
