Shell Malaysia today presented 125 students from Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Subang and Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Subang Bestari with motorcycle licenses as part of its #ShellSelamatSampai initiative launched earlier this year. The event was attended by YBhg Tan Sri Datuk Sri Lee Lam Thye, Chairman of the Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research (MIROS) and Prof. Dr. Wong Shaw Voon, Director General of The Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research.
The motorcycle licenses program was one of two pilot programs that Shell introduced as part of its comprehensive road safety movement to drive road safety awareness and behavioural change among motorcyclists and youth.
Together with Road Transport Department Malaysia (JPJ), Shell set up the necessary arrangements for motorcycle riding lessons and subsequently presented motorcycle licenses in a bid to encourage better road safety understanding and skills among youths.
Students who qualify for motorcycle riding lessons were interviewed by Shell representatives to determine their family background and reasons for using a motorcycle to school.
Once identified, these students went through formal motorcycle riding lessons from approved driving schools and passed competencies tests to ensure they are properly equipped with road safety knowledge and skills before being awarded with a B2 motorcycle license.
#ShellSelamatSampai is designed to drive positive road safety behaviour by reaching youth and motorcyclists holistically across three strategic environments: secondary schools, universities, and the community.
To drive impact sustainably, #ShellSelamatSampai works with schools, colleges, universities and communities to develop relevant road safety policies and improve infrastructure, such as road and safety signage upgrade and refurbishment works.
In secondary schools, #ShellSelamatSampai provides practical knowledge and training on road safety as an official extracurricular program of the school. The programme delivers a comprehensive and fun learning module developed in collaboration with the Road Safety Department (Jabatan Keselamatan Jalan Raya – JKJR).
#ShellSelamatSampai organised its pilot program at two secondary schools, Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Subang and Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Subang Bestari; as well as UiTM Selangor Puncak Alam and the Kampung Melayu Subang community, reaching approximately 40,000 people. In this pilot, Shell Malaysia provided funds for selected students who successfully complete formal motorcycle riding lessons and passed motorcycle competency tests to obtain legal motorcycle licenses.
#ShellSelamatSampai mainstream program will be launched in Miri, Sarawak next year.
#ShellSelamatSampai partners include the Ministry of Education; Road Safety Department (JKJR); Road Transport Department (JPJ); Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM); residents associations, local councils and district offices of participating communities; as well as participating secondary schools, colleges and universities.
