The all new Mercedes-Benz E-Class has just scored highly across the board, with a 95% safety rating for adult occupants, 90% for child occupants, 77%for pedestrians, and 62% on safety assistance.
These high scores are partly down to the E-Class being fitted with ‘Pre Safe’ – Merc’s safety system which senses when an accident is about to occur and primes the restraint and protection systems for collision as well as autonomous emergency braking. Both safety features are fitted as standard to the model.
Despite the four door saloon having an active bonnet, complete with sensors in the bumper to detect when a pedestrian has been struck and actuators which lift the bonnet to provide additional protection, pedestrian safety suffered due to the feature poorly protecting the pelvis of any struck pedestrian.
Euro NCAP Frontal Impact takes place at 64 Km/h, 40% of the width of the car striking a deformable barrier. In the Full Width test, 100% of the width of the car impacts a rigid barrier at 50 Km/h. In the side impact, a mobile deformable barrier impacts the driver’s door at 50 km/h. In the pole test, the car tested is propelled sideways at 32 km/h into a rigid pole.
