Set for launch at the end of 2016, the new BMW 5 Series will go on sale in the first few months of 2017.
New Interior
The BMW 5 Series’ interior will be one of the main selling points for customers looking for a new, upmarket executive saloon. There will be a new steering wheel, refreshed instrument binnacle and a new iDrive screen on top of the dash.
Consumers will find much of the technology from the flagship BMW 7 Series limousine will have made its way into the new car. The 5 Series will feature a range of new technology integrated into BMW’s iDrive infotainment system. One such feature will be gesture control for answering phonecalls and adjusting the stereo settings.
The new 5 Series will also offer remote-parking technology. This clever feature will afford drivers the luxury of not having to squeeze their car into tight parking spaces themselves, as the array of sensors and computers on board the BMW will allow the car to park itself.
It’ll feature even more self-driving tech as well, including what BMW calls ‘Steering and Lane Control Assistant’, which allows the car to essentially drive itself within a motorway lane. This system uses sensors, cameras and radars all around the car to sense where it is and what’s around it. The car will also be available with the Crossroads Warning system. This can tell if a car is about to pull out in front of you, warns you that there’s a potential collision imminent and pre-conditions the brakes for an emergency stop. It’ll even perform this emergency stop for you if you fail to heed the warnings in time. BMW claims that these are “just two of many” driver assistance systems that will feature on the new BMW 5 Series.
Engines and running costs
A number of new engines are expected to power the 2017 BMW 5-Series. While still unconfirmed, petrol and diesel versions of BMW’s latest 1.5-litre three-cylinder engines destined for the new 3-Series could make an appearance in the 5 Series. This new 5-Series will also offer a frugal and environmentally friendly plug-in hybrid option, too, improving on the fuel economy of the current BMW ActiveHybrid 5 model.
For The New BMW M5
Two engines are being considered for the new M5. One is a revised version of the current 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8, the other is a new turbocharged 6-cylinder. Power is likely to be well over the 600bhp mark. This next-generation BMW 5-Series will go on sale in 2017 and a price increase is expected due to extensive use of expensive lightweight materials, as well as the significant increase of in-car technology.
