The popularity of drones or quad-copters for leisure use has increased in recent years and new development in technology has given birth to a completely new “future sport” known as drone racing. With the use of a mini camera mounted on drones wirelessly streaming live video and a video headset goggles for the pilot, drones can be maneuvered through tricky courses with great precision and speed. Realizing the potential of drone racing to be the next big thing since E-sports, 2 Cool Productions and MultiGP Malaysia have today announced their collaboration to run a drone racing championship right here in Malaysia. 2 Cool Productions is an event management company and main promoter of the event and MultiGP Malaysia is the rights holder of the Malaysian MultiGP Chapter.
MultiGP originated in the US, it is a drone sports organization that currently organizes drone racing leagues in 700 chapters internationally. The championship in Malaysia is sanctioned by the Drone Racing Association Malaysia (DRAM) and it complies with stipulated safety requirements and international rules and regulations.
Also announced today is the Title Name of the championship. Eco World Development Group Berhad, a well-known property developer in Malaysia and abroad, has a keen interest in developing this new sport. They have become the Title Sponsor as well as the Venue Sponsor for the championship at Bukit Bintang City Centre and the championship name unveiled today is the Ecoworld MultiGP Drone Racing Championship 2016.
The EcoWorld MultiGP Drone Racing Championship 2016 kicks-off in Malaysia’s capital Kuala Lumpur on August 6th and 7th, 2016. In the heart of the city is the mixed development project of Bukit Bintang City Centre (BBCC), a joint-venture between EPF, UDA and Eco World Development Group Berhad. The race has added significance especially to the pilots competing as the race is also the National Qualifiers for the World Drone Racing Championship to be held in Hawaii October 17 – 22, 2016. 150 pilots from 30 countries are expected to compete for a total prize money of USD200,000. As the official qualifier race, the top 5 Malaysians from the BBCC leg will qualify to represent Malaysia in Hawaii.
A huge crowd is expected to throng BBCC, from drone enthusiast to fans that enjoy the speed rush, to families planning a fun weekend out. Entry is free-of-charge and is open to the public. Apart from enjoying the race itself the public can enjoy other activities that have been lined up that weekend. There will be a netted arena for the public to try their hand at drone flying and also flying simulators.
Further adrenaline rushing activities include the Bagjump Trampoline where the public get to jump on dual trampolines and land on a cushioned safety bag. Another highlight for the weekend is the Sky Rider where a person gets strapped to helium balloons and with a tethered wire is allowed to float up to the sky to a maximum of 50 feet for the best view of the race.
