We would like Toyota to reproduce this classic sports car with all the modern features. We are sure it will be a runaway sales success.
The stunning 2000GT was primarily designed by Toyota and built by Yamaha from 1967-1970. Never a common sight, only 351 cars were built during the 4-year period, mostly due to the high price tag which was north of USD7000. The real impact of the 2000GT went beyond its small numbers. In the late 1960s, Japan already had one of the world’s largest automotive industries, and their exports to countries, especially the United States, were increasing year by year. At the same time, Japanese cars were mostly regarded as utilitarian and uninspired.
The 2000GT sort of came out of nowhere to change this. It showed Japanese manufacturers could produce a beautiful sports car on a par with those from Europe. As a halo car, it may have contributed in some small way to the enormous success of Japanese manufacturers in the years to follow, as they broke the 1 million car mark on an annual exports by the early 1970s. The 2000GT was powered by a 2-liter inline-6 with DOHC and hemispherical combustion chambers.
Today the value of this rare Toyota is beyond belief as its numbers are few and demand very high. There is a white pristine condition unit on the island of Penang and the owner refuses to sell….for now.
