Marchy Lee and Shaun Thong of Phoenix Racing Asia triumphed in round 3 of the GT Asia Series season at Buriram, Thailand on Saturday. It was the team’s maiden win in its first season in the series and the first victory of the new Audi R8 LMS race car in the competition. The Chang International Circuit saw an action-packed weekend with tough competition and temperatures of over 60 degrees inside the car.
After strong practice and qualifying sessions, Lee and Thong started round 3 from second on the grid with their #5 Audi R8 LMS. Following a strong opening stint from Thong, Lee took over the wheel of the Audi R8 LMS halfway through the race in position five. Being in brilliant form, Lee was the fastest driver on the Thai tarmac. One by one, he overtook his rivals and celebrated victory with a four second advantage.
In Sunday’s round 4, Lee and Thong faced an unfortunate technical issue which resulted in a tenth place finish. It was a mixed weekend for the second entry of Phoenix Racing Asia. The #6 entry of two-time Audi R8 LMS Cup winner Alex Yoong and the Cup’s former amateur champion Alex Au finished fifth on Sunday, taking some consolation after being unable to finish Saturday’s race.
The GT Asia Series will return on July 1-3 at Okayama International Circuit, Japan.
