Mazda Only Manufacturer to Pass Real-World Diesel Emissions Test

Following the Volkswagen Dieselgate scandal, the Japanese Transport Ministry have been carrying out real world emissions testing on six of its nation’s car models. What it found that real world NOx emissions were 2-5 times higher than standard on the Toyota Land Cruiser Prado and Hi-Ace, Nissan X-Trail, the Mitsubishi Delica D:5. Some of the models tested emitted as much as 10 times more than the standard allowed for despite the absence of any illegal tampering software.

While this isn’t illegal, as current law only requires car pass laboratory testing, it is concerning.

One manufacturer that passed all diesel emissions test in the real world was Mazda. Their SKYACTIV-D engines seemed to be the only ones capable of meeting the standards set by the ministry both in laboratory conditions and in real world conditions. The models tested were the Mazda2 (known as Demio in Japan) and the CX-5.
