It has been one of the most loved car cars in history. Movies have revolved around it (The Herbie series from Disney) and in just about any part of the planet it is nearly always instantly recognized. The last version was a huge success despite some small minor issues with space, power and variants as it shared the mechanicals and platform with the Mk4 Golf.
For the next generation, the 2012 Beetle will ride on the current VW Golf MK6 platform, and it’s expected that powertrains will be shared between both cars. Volkswagen’s 2-liter inline-4 Turbo is a safe bet, as is the 1.4-liter TFSI which is super fuel efficient and more practical for the urban user, but some sources within Volkswagen have told us that the next-generation Beetle might be available with a pretty potent engine. Something you can chase down a Mk6 Golf GTi which could well be the ‘R’ engine. Whatever the case, we’ll know more when the car makes its official debut within the next few days for the global market. Watch for its arrival here in Malaysia in the next few months.
