Mazda Motor Corp has just launched a facelifted Mazda2 (also known as the Mazda Demio in Japan) compact car. This is the 1st of many Mazda models to get its new fuel-saving engines that achieve mileage comparable to hybrids without the use of expensive electric motors.
Mazda said that since June 9 it had received around 6,500 orders for the car before the start of sales in Japan, equivalent to 108 percent of the monthly sales target of 6,000 vehicles. Mazda is aiming to improve fuel economy on its cars by 30 percent by 2015 compared with 2008 levels, and will introduce the next-generation “SKYACTIV” engine and transmission technology on all its cars by around 2016. It plans to build on its current technologies to eventually develop hybrids, plug-in hybrids and all-electric cars. These new Mazda models will see introductions in Malaysia in coming months.
