Today in 1939, five time Grand Prix winner Gianclaudio Giuseppe “Clay” Regazzoni was born. The Swiss racing driver won his first Grand Prix driving for Ferrari in 1970 and continued driving for them for 2 years, then returned in 1974. He won the Williams team’s first Grand Prix victory at the 1979 British Grand Prix at Silverstone.
Unfortunately, in 1980 he was left paralysed from the waist down after a crash at the 1980 US Grand Prix West. Regazzoni kept racing in non F-1 events using hand-controlled vehicles.
