The soon to be launched MK7 VW Golf Gti will be powered by a carryover version of the current 2.0-litre turbocharged engine. It will get a mild boost in peak power to some 220bhp. To achieve 220hp the current EA888 engine will still be used but with some internal reworkings. Audi had also developed its new valve lift system. Volkswagen is also working on an electronically controlled, mechanically locking diff for GTI and R models. This guarantees that the drive is still directed to the tire with most grip when accelerating. What VW plans for the next Golf is to undertake significant engineering revisions to the 1.4-litre ‘twincharger’ engine, the EA111. The twincharger will lose its supercharger to persist in production as a soft-turbo petrol engine that has the rating of 150bhp from a single exhaust-driven blower. This will be renamed the EA112.
Also in the pipeline will be a R-badged Volkswagen Golf Cabriolet which debuted as a concept at the recent VW meet at Worthersee in Germany. However, no production decision was announced back then. The Golf Cabriolet R will be powered by the 261bhp 2.0-litre turbocharged engine that’s used in the Scirocco R. The Scirocco and Golf R cars will be launched in Malaysia in just a few months.
