Sometimes you can have the best team in the world, and the best equipment in the world, but lady luck simply doesn’t shine on you when it comes to race day. It’s hit some of the best in the business at the most inopportune times, such as the numerous Le Mans LMP1 cars that end up being taken out by stray Ferrari contenders during the 24 Hours of Le Mans.
While the 6 hour endurance race was meant to be a test session for Zanardi and his teammates in their modified Z4 GT3, they were forced to retire after roughly 4 hours due to leaking fluids. But that didn’t mean that the race was entirely pointless, because every race can be treated as a learning experience.
Teams constantly grow. For the trio of Zanardi, Spengler, and Glock, they were made to acquaint themselves with the car and the specific quirks of it. There was importance placed on practicing driver changes, especially with Zanardi being a double amputee and other various setting and adjustments necessary to transition from Zanardi to the other two drivers.
But, not all is lost for BMW. The BMW Sports Trophy Team Marc VDS took a spot on the podium. Markus Palttala (FI) and BMW works drivers Lucas Luhr (DE) and Maxime Martin (BE) finished third in their number 46 BMW Z4 GT3. The official 24h test day at Spa-Francorchamps will take place this Wednesday, 24th June. The 24 Hours of Spa-Francorchamps will be held on 25th and 26th July.
