Earlier this month, spy photos of the eight-generation Toyota Hilux were posted to the web which showed the pickup from just about every angle. Now, Toyota Thailand released an official teaser. The next Hilux is more of a major overhaul than a completely redone pick-up, but enough is changed to make it look like an all-new product. It’s a bit pointless teasing a car that people have already seen, but the interesting thing is that they’ve also shown two new engines.
They’re both diesels and bear the GD designation, replacing the 10 year old KD engines that went into the older models. GD engines have intercooled turbochargers and come equipped with common-rail injection. The tech that goes into it, ESTEC, stands for Economy with Superior Thermal Efficient Combustion improves both performance and efficiency of the upcoming Hilux and proves that the someone new needs to be put in charge of naming new technology at Toyota.
The specifications of the new engines are as follows.
2GD 2.4: 2,395 cc, 160 horsepower and 400 Nm of torque, paired to a five-speed manual gearbox. It generates 40 more horsepower and 75 Nm more torque than the outgoing 2.5L 2KD-FTV.
1GD 2.8: 2,795 cc, 177 horsepower and 420 Nm of torque on 5-speed manual or 450 Nm with six-speed automatic. This replaces the current 1KD-FTV 3.0-liter that delivers 171 hp and 343 Nm.
Here’s the teaser Toyota released as well. Be warned, it is very much a Thai-specific ad.
