Mercedes AMG Petronas continue their relentless march forwards as they take a first and second place victory during the Spanish Grand Prix over the weekend.
The pair of Hamilton and Rosberg have been doing surprisingly well with these new turbocharged engines in play. Mercedes really took the design brief for these engines liberally, and their creative solution of separating the hot and cold side has yielded some truly monstrous engines.
Rosberg took the win this time round, being the ninth of his career as an F1 driver. With a good start and consistent performance throughout the race, he managed to take the victory without issue and close the gap in points between him and Hamilton.
Hamilton, on the other hand, had a poor start to the race. But as a testament to his skill, he managed to claw his way back up to second place. This was also owed to a controversial 3-stop strategy which gave him the edge to overtake Vettel through the race.
With a 22 second lead over Hamilton and 15 laps to go, Rosberg decided to take a more relaxed pace and preserve the engine. It’s a good approach to have when dealing with limited engines through the season. Hamilton was gaining about 1 second each lap, but towards the end he too relented and accepted a second place finish.
