So how about Tesla models in Malaysia? Are those cars affected too?
Tesla is recalling about 239,000 of its vehicles in the U.S. due to a rearview camera issue that may cause it to fail, posing a potential safety risk. The recall, disclosed in filings with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) on Friday, affects certain 2024 to 2025 Model 3 and Model S sedans, as well as 2023-2025 Model X and Model Y SUVs.
Tesla acknowledged in a letter to NHTSA that a malfunctioning rearview camera reduces the driver’s visibility, increasing the likelihood of an accident. The company has already taken action to address the issue by deploying an over-the-air (OTA) software update, which is being offered to affected vehicles free of charge.
Moreover, this software update aims to resolve some of the rearview camera problems without requiring a physical visit to a service center. However, Tesla also mentioned that vehicles with certain hardware failures may need more extensive repairs, such as a computer replacement. In 2024, Tesla issued a total of 16 recalls in the U.S. impacting over 5.14 million electric vehicles (EVs), according to NHTSA data.
The recalls included a combination of software updates and parts replacements to address various issues, including those related to the company’s newest model, the Cybertruck. Over 40 percent of the recalls in 2024 involved the Cybertruck, Tesla’s new electric pickup truck that began deliveries to customers in late 2023.
On top of that, Tesla stated that it had received 887 warranty claims and numerous field reports about the rearview camera failures but emphasized that there were no reported incidents of crashes, injuries, or fatalities linked to this issue. The company continues to work with NHTSA to resolve the recall and ensure the safety of its customers.
Tesla’s approach to recalls has often included remote fixes via software updates, minimizing the inconvenience to customers and streamlining the process. As of now, customers who experience circuit board failures or related issues that cause the backup camera to malfunction can have their vehicles repaired at no cost by Tesla.
The company remains committed to addressing vehicle safety concerns swiftly, further enhancing its reputation for innovation and customer service in the EV market. This recall underscores the ongoing challenges Tesla faces in maintaining its vehicle systems and ensuring the safety of its extensive fleet on the road.
