We need technology like these Dubai smart cameras here in Malaysia soon
Dubai’s advanced traffic enforcement system is tightening its grip on road safety, using smart cameras to monitor and penalize drivers for violations, whether their windows are tinted or not. If you’re thinking that tinted windows will shield you from detection, think again.
Dubai Police’s innovative technology can still catch a range of offenses, including distracted driving, even through darkened glass. Dubai Police have launched an awareness drive to educate motorists about common traffic violations that are now being monitored by smart cameras. These include distracted driving, not wearing a seatbelt, and using mobile phones behind the wheel.
With these cutting-edge cameras, even tinted windows won’t help you escape fines for breaking the law. Under UAE traffic laws, the maximum allowable tint on side and rear car windows is 50 percent. This regulation ensures that drivers maintain sufficient visibility, especially at night. The windshield, however, must remain clear.
If your vehicle’s windshield is tinted beyond a 15cm width, it’s a violation, leading to a hefty Dh1,500 fine anywhere in the UAE. In addition, recent amendments under Decree No. 30 of 2023 further penalize drivers with excessively tinted windows. Not only can your car be fined, but it could also be impounded if the tint exceeds the legal limit.
If your vehicle is impounded, you’ll need to pay Dh10,000 (about RM12,2561) to have it released. This strict enforcement shows Dubai’s commitment to keeping roads safe and ensuring that visibility is not compromised.
One of the most dangerous behaviors on the road is distracted driving. Using a mobile phone, eating, or engaging in any other activity that takes your attention away from the road can have deadly consequences. In Dubai alone, 32 lives were lost this year due to distracted driving accidents, many caused by sudden swerving and loss of control.
To combat this, Dubai Police have introduced tougher penalties for distracted driving. Drivers caught using their phones or other devices while behind the wheel face a fine of Dh800 and four black points on their driving license. Additionally, if the offense is deemed severe enough, your car could be impounded for up to 30 days.
As Dubai continues to enhance its traffic monitoring systems, it’s crucial for drivers to be aware of the rules and adhere to them. The smart cameras deployed throughout the city are watching, and breaking the law could lead to fines, black points, or even the impoundment of your vehicle, so stay safe, stay focused, and make sure you’re following the rules.
