Chery OMODA E5 Receives SIRIM Certification For Its EV Battery

The Chery Omoda E5 proves its battery is safe despite being an EV

Chery Malaysia has made a significant milestone in the electric vehicle (EV) industry by becoming the first automotive brand in the country to receive SIRIM certification for its EV battery, the Lithium Battery Pack.

This achievement, awarded by SIRIM QAS International, Malaysia’s premier certification, inspection, and testing body, underscores Chery’s unwavering commitment to quality, safety, and compliance with the highest international standards. This recognition not only highlights Chery’s dedication to advancing sustainable mobility but also solidifies its leadership position within the EV sector.

Moreover, it emphasizes Chery’s commitment to local environmental sustainability and governance (ESG) efforts. The EV battery underwent extensive testing in China, in accordance with the UN R100 standard, to ensure it meets rigorous international safety and performance requirements for reliability, efficiency and durability.

For Malaysian consumers, the SIRIM certification is especially significant as it assures that Chery’s EVs are equipped with batteries that meet stringent safety and quality standards. This provides added confidence to customers, knowing that they are investing in vehicles that are not only innovative but also safe and reliable.

Additionally, this milestone also aligns with Malaysia’s broader efforts to promote sustainable development and reduce carbon emissions, contributing to a greener and cleaner environment for future generations. Chery’s flagship all-electric vehicle, the OMODA E5, is currently the only electric model available in Malaysia.

On top of that, priced at RM146,800, the OMODA E5 comes in four stunning colors, namely Aqua Green, Khaki White, Phantom Grey and Dark Black. It features a 61kWh high-capacity lithium-ion phosphate blade battery, providing long-range driving and quick charging. With 201hp and 340Nm of torque, the OMODA E5 delivers an impressive 430km WLTP range.

Chery also celebrated the production of its first Completely Knocked Down (CKD) unit of the OMODA E5 in October, rolling off the line at the Inokom Plant in Kulim, Kedah. The OMODA E5 has also earned five-star safety ratings from the European New Car Assessment Programme (Euro NCAP) and the Australasian New Car Assessment Programme (ANCAP).

Chery Malaysia is working toward obtaining SIRIM certification for its future fleet of EVs, which will further expand the company’s presence in the Malaysian market. Looking ahead, Chery plans to extend its range of electrified vehicles (xEVs) beyond battery EVs (BEVs) to include plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEVs) in 2025.
