Mercedes-AMG ONE Breaks Its Own Lap Record On The Nürburgring-Nordschleife

The new record set by the Mercedes-AMG ONE is 6:29.090 minutes

The Mercedes-AMG ONE, equipped with advanced hybrid technology derived from Formula 1, has solidified its status as the fastest production car on the Nürburgring-Nordschleife, achieving a remarkable lap time of 6:29.090 minutes. I’m sure the “Fine, I’ll do it myself” Thanos meme is exactly what comes to mind for a lot of you as well.

This record, set by DTM driver Maro Engel, improves the vehicle’s previous best by over five seconds, making it the first road-legal car to break the 6:30 mark. Michael Schiebe, Chairman of Mercedes-AMG GmbH, expressed pride in the team’s achievement, emphasising their commitment to pushing automotive boundaries.

Moreover, Engel noted the ideal track conditions during his record attempt, with dry asphalt and moderate temperatures, which facilitated optimal grip. Achieving this record required meticulous preparation and strategic use of the AMG ONE’s hybrid powertrain. Engel utilised the vehicle’s four-stage Energy Flow Control system to effectively manage electric energy, employing a technique known as “lift and coast” to maximise efficiency during braking phases.

Extensive testing in both simulations and on the Nordschleife allowed the team to refine their approach for the record lap. The AMG ONE combines a 1.6-liter V6 hybrid engine with four electric motors, producing a total output of 1,063 horsepower and a top speed of 352 km/h. The vehicle features cutting-edge technologies like an electrically assisted turbocharger, which improves throttle response and overall performance.

On top of that, its hybrid drive system includes a lithium-ion battery capable of delivering an electric range of 18.1km and utilises innovative cooling methods to maintain optimal temperature during operation. While many may look at this as a “Only Mercedes can beat Mercedes” moment, I think we shouldn’t overlook the hard work that went into it too.

With an 800-volt system, the AMG ONE is designed for maximum efficiency, allowing for lightweight construction and reduced cable sizes. The car’s all-wheel-drive system, with torque vectoring, ensures superior handling and driving dynamics. Engel’s record lap was conducted under strict guidelines, with the vehicle’s standard condition verified by TÜV Rheinland.

Overall, the Mercedes-AMG ONE exemplifies a blend of high-performance engineering and innovative hybrid technology, setting new benchmarks in the super-sports car category while delivering a thrilling driving experience. The blend of F1 technology and road car capabilities makes it a standout in the automotive world, appealing to both enthusiasts and collectors.
