New MINI Cooper S Convertible Keeps The Top Down And The Petrol Engine

The MINI Cooper S Convertible is the latest family member to be added, but why isn’t there an EV version?

MINI has unveiled its latest Cooper S Convertible, maintaining the brand’s commitment to open-top driving pleasure but sticking to petrol powertrains.

Unlike its electric hatchback sibling, the new Convertible exclusively offers petrol engines at launch, ensuring the characteristic MINI driving experience remains intact for sun-seeking enthusiasts.

Swift Open-Air Experience

The centerpiece of the new Convertible is its fully automatic soft top, which can be operated at speeds up to 30 km/h. The roof retracts in a swift 18 seconds and closes in just 15 seconds, living up to the model’s “Always Open” philosophy.

For those who prefer a more subtle breeze, the roof can also function as a sunroof, opening to a length of 40 centimeters regardless of speed.

When it comes to practicality, MINI has thought through the details. The soft top, available in classic black or with an optional grey Union Jack pattern, folds behind the rear seats to minimize impact on cargo space. The luggage compartment offers 160 liters of volume with the top down, expanding to 215 liters when closed.

Powerful Petrol Engines

The new Cooper S Convertible is powered by a robust two-liter four-cylinder engine, producing 204 hp and 300 Nm of torque. This powerplant propels the open-top MINI from 0 to 100 km/h in just 6.9 seconds, reaching a top speed of 237 km/h. For those seeking a slightly tamer experience, the Cooper C Convertible variant offers 163 hp, while a performance-oriented John Cooper Works version is also available for maximum thrills.

Design Evolution

The exterior design emphasizes clean surfaces and carefully chosen details. The iconic round LED headlights and redesigned front grille maintain the MINI’s charismatic appearance while pushing it into the modern era. The car’s compact proportions – measuring 3,879 mm in length, 1,431 mm in height, and 1,744 mm in width – ensure it remains true to the brand’s urban-friendly ethos.

Tech-Forward Interior

Inside, the Convertible showcases MINI’s new “Charismatic Simplicity” design philosophy. A high-resolution 240 mm OLED display dominates the dashboard, featuring the new MINI Operating System 9. The system supports voice commands through the MINI Intelligent Personal Assistant, activated by saying “Hey MINI!” or using the steering wheel button.

Customization Options

MINI offers three distinct trim levels for the Convertible: Classic, Favoured, and JCW. Customers can choose from twelve exterior paint finishes, including the exclusive Copper Grey, and various wheel designs ranging from 16 to 18 inches. The interior can be tailored with different upholstery options and textile surfaces, many incorporating recycled materials.
