Mercedes-Benz Trains Bomba On EV Emergency Response Preparedness

Mercedes-Benz Malaysia gives the Fire and Rescue Department of Malaysia (Bomba) training to deal with EV emergencies.

As electric vehicles (EVs) gain traction in Malaysia, Mercedes-Benz Malaysia is taking proactive steps to ensure public safety and support the country’s ambitions of becoming an Energy Efficient Vehicle (EEV) hub. The luxury automaker recently conducted a comprehensive EV emergency training programme for the Fire and Rescue Department of Malaysia (Bomba) at its state-of-the-art Training Academy in Puchong, Selangor.

The “Electrification Drive: Fire and Rescue Team Orientation” programme was designed to equip emergency responders with crucial knowledge and skills for managing EV-related incidents. Over 40 Bomba personnel participated in the training, which covered both theoretical and practical aspects of EV emergency response.

Amanda Zhang, CEO & President of Mercedes-Benz Cars Malaysia, emphasized the importance of this initiative, stating, “This programme underscores Mercedes-Benz Malaysia’s commitment to public safety by equipping rescue teams with the necessary knowledge and tools to manage EV emergencies.”

The training curriculum included identification of EV models, high voltage vehicle and battery handling, battery scanner usage, fire blanket application, and emergency protocols. Participants also received hands-on training with the Mercedes-Benz Rescue Assist App, a tool that provides rapid access to critical vehicle information during emergencies.

PgKB I Mohd Tilmizi bin Mustapa from Bomba highlighted the growing need for specialized EV training, noting that it “reduces risks during incidents and enhances both the efficiency and safety of our teams, allowing them to manage situations effectively while minimizing hazards to themselves and the public.”

Mercedes-Benz Malaysia’s commitment to safety extends beyond this training initiative. Edmin Naidoo, Vice President of Customer Services, emphasized that all technical experts in their authorized service centers undergo rigorous training to handle the complex composition of EVs, ensuring the highest standards of safety and service for customers.

This collaboration between Mercedes-Benz Malaysia and Bomba represents a significant step towards developing a well-prepared and efficient emergency response ecosystem for EVs. As the automotive industry continues to evolve towards more sustainable technologies, such partnerships between manufacturers and emergency services will be crucial in ensuring public safety.
