Just like the sedan, the new E-Class cabriolet and coupe features new front and rear ends that do look impressive in front but with little changes to the rather boring rear end. New for 2013 are the powerful and efficient BlueDIRECT four-cylinder engines that feature pioneering injection technology and new assistance systems that are offered under the heading “intelligent drive”. One of these assistance systems is the Stereo Multi-Purpose Camera found in the vicinity of the rear-view mirror, which provides a three-dimensional view to around 50 meters in front of the vehicle.
This system can detect vehicles that are driving ahead but also pedestrians and a variety of traffic signs. Another system is the Collision Prevention Assist, a system that reduces the risk of a rear-end collision. Attention Assist is a system that informs the driver about their level of fatigue or the amount of driving time which has elapsed since their last break. Six petrol engines are available ranging in output from 184hp to 408hp.
The BlueDirect four-cylinder petrol engine is new and it uses a spray-guided direct injection based on the same technology used in the latest generation of six and eight-cylinder engines from Mercedes-Benz. A new addition is the six-cylinder engine, which is being offered for the first time as the E 400 with biturbo drive. These engines are offered with a six-speed manual transmission or the 7G-Tronic Plus automatic transmission.
