Young Driver Whacks His Brand New BMW. Why Worry? Got Insurance? Right?

The young BMW driver also ran into 7 other cars and is apparently just 19 years old

So on 16 June 2024, a young 19 year old man just enjoying a drive in his BMW 430i 4-door coupe and ended up crashing into a guardrail at the Yangmei rest stop, after crashing into seven other vehicles, three of which were severely damaged. So, what exactly happened here? Let’s find out.

So apparently as the young 19 year old, apparently named Xie (surname), had activated the cruise control on his BMW 430i as he was coming up on the Yangmei rest stop but apparently, something must have gone wrong when he did so as he then proceeded to crash into a guardrail and seven other vehicles.

Moreover, all the news and posts about this were made in Chinese, not surprising considering it did happen in Taiwan, so my understanding of the news is limited, but from what I can gather, right after this, young Xie rushed out of the car and screamed out “the repairs will cost millions” and the pain on his face is obvious and we sympathise with the young man.

Clearly, the car itself is very badly damaged and considering that most news sources reporting on this state that the BMW 430i starts from 2.55 million there, and adding up the damage he caused to the other cars and the guardrail, then yes, the repair costs will indeed exceed millions. Well, at least he has insurance, so he will be fine, right?

Well, actually, that part was never specified. The reports did discuss whether young Xie had “Type-B” or “Type-C” insurance (probably something like second party or third party insurance here in Malaysia) and depending on which he had (or did not have), the repair costs range from anywhere between mildly inconvenient to being in debt for life.

On top of that, we all know that BMWs are not cheap so young Xie likely did not buy this car by himself. Most likely, his parents would have helped him out so his cries of anguish were more than likely his fear of how his parents would react. Not to sound stereotypical, but we all know that most Asian parents are very unforgiving so this is not a stretch to imagine.
