Smart #5 Electric SUV: A Powerful and Stylish Addition to the EV Market
The electric vehicle revolution is gaining momentum, and Smart is making a bold statement with the introduction of its all-new #5 Electric SUV, the brand’s largest and boldest EV yet. Recently leaked by the Chinese regulator, this highly anticipated model promises to combine impressive performance with eye-catching design though it may struggle in the super-competitive EV environment. The smart #5 concept was just shown months ago and it looks like some of the outlandish ideas have been dialed back for production.
Dimensions and Design
The Smart #5 is a mid-size SUV measuring 4705mm in length, 1920mm in width, and 1705mm in height, with a generous wheelbase of 2900mm, this vehicle offers ample interior space for five passengers. The #5 can accommodate wheel sizes ranging from 18 inches to an impressive 21 inches. With a substantial size increase comes huge weight gain. The top trim level boasts a curb weight of 2,450 kg.
Powertrain Options
One of the standout features of the Smart #5 is its diverse but familiar range of powertrain options, catering to various performance preferences. The rear-wheel-drive (RWD) variants offer a choice between a single motor producing 250 kW (335 hp) or a more potent 267 kW (358 hp) output. For those seeking ultimate traction and acceleration, the all-wheel-drive (AWD) trims deliver exhilarating performance with dual-motor configurations. The first AWD option combines a 165 kW (221 hp) front motor with a 267 kW (358 hp) rear motor, generating a combined power output of 432 kW (579 hp). The range-topping AWD variant takes performance to new heights with a 165 kW (221 hp) front motor and a 310 kW (416 hp) rear motor, delivering an impressive total of 475 kW (638 hp).
Battery Technology
To power these robust powertrains, the Smart #5 employs advanced battery technology. The RWD versions are equipped with lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries, while the AWD trims will feature nickel manganese cobalt (NMC) battery packs. For context, smart are also relying in NMC battery chemistry in their #1 and #3 models. Although the exact battery capacity has not been disclosed, the top trim level is rumored to house a 100 kWh battery pack, promising an impressive CLTC range of 700 km. Bear in mind CLTC is a little optimistic in its range.
According to reports, the vehicle will feature an 800V architecture and 4C-rated charging, allowing it to be fully charged in just 15 minutes. This level of convenience ensures that drivers can spend more time on the road and less time waiting at charging stations.
Sleek Styling and Anticipated Launch
While performance and efficiency are paramount, the Smart #5 does not compromise on style. With its sleek design, black arches, and rugged fenders, this electric SUV exudes a sporty and modern aesthetic. The top speed of all variations is capped at an exhilarating 200 km/h, with the top trim is allowed to reach 210km/h.
Although the official launch date remains undisclosed, industry insiders at CarNewsChina.com expect the Smart #5 to hit the market in Q4 of this year. As the electric vehicle market continues to evolve, the Smart #5 is poised to make a significant impact, offering a compelling combination of power, range, and style for discerning EV enthusiasts.
