The Opel Frontera name returns this time with Stellantis underpinnings.
Many Malaysians will remember the Opel Frontera SUV from the 1990s and some may even still be driving one today. This was a handsome, rugged off-roader which was actually engineered by Isuzu and went to spawn the MU-X that we got for a short time. The new Opel Frontera is a completely different beast.
The 2024 Opel Frontera will be based on the Stellantis Small Car Platform that underpins the Citroen C3 Aircross. It will be built in the Trnava factory in Slovakia and offered as a petrol hybrid and battery electric vehicle. There is a very small chance it will arrive in time to take advantage of the current full excise duty and import tax exemption on electric vehicles.
Our guess is that Stellantis Malaysia will need more time to consider if Opel is a brand worth reviving in Malaysia. The older generation certainly have fond memories of Opel cars here but everyone below the age of 30 has probably forgotten that they used to have a presence here. Here are some details on the car to get you enticed.
