Toyota and its luxury car brand Lexus have had a great year with their hybrid models globally and have sold an impressive 100,000 units of both brands in Europe for the first time in 2012. Both brands were able to reach the milestone following a 29-percent surge in demand for their hybrid vehicles in Europe to 109,478 units in 2012. Per brand figures were 83,699 hybrids for Toyota and 25,779 for Lexus. Hybrids accounted for 90 percent of Lexus’ total sales in western Europe in 2012. Toyota launched the first-generation Toyota Prius in Europe and the United States in 2000, with its first full year of sales only in 2001. It only took Toyota and Prius five years to reach 100,000 hybrid vehicle sales in the US and 12 years in Europe.
