With Geely having this much success with EVs Proton could be selling EVs next
Geely has reportedly sold 137,900 vehicles in June, up 9 percent from a year earlier. Sales of pure electric vehicles (EVs) and plug-in hybrid EVs (PHEVs) reached 26,900 and 11,700 units respectively last month. What’s more, in the first half of 2023, sales rose 13 percent to 694,000 units from the same period last year.
This is very good new for our first national carmaker, proton, as the brand is currently a partner with Geely here in the country and its three most famous models, the X series SUVs are all basically rebadged Geely SUVs so it is possible that we will see more Geely hybrid and EV models being sold here in Malaysia as Proton models.
Moreover, with Geely reporting such healthy sales it means that the company will also now have more disposable revenue that it can use to improve EV charging infrastructure here in Malaysia or even develop its own form of EV chargers or battery swapping technology to make its EVs even more accessible.
Either way, the brand’s success is a very good sign, especially considering that most brands in China are locked in an intense price war started by Tesla. Plus with other Chinese brands like BYD, GWM and Chery setting up shop here in Malaysia, Geely having a local partner gives them an advantage.
On top of that, there are still six more months to go for the year so Geely could even potentially double its sales by then, especially since EVs and hybrids are becoming more and more popular all across the globe and with Malaysia slowly adopting EVs and improving charging infrastructure too, Geely could see record profits this year.
Well, congratulations to Geely for this amazing achievement and I hope the brand will continue to find success both internationally and locally and also help out to speed up the process of bringing Malaysia up to date with electric charging infrastructure as well.
So what do you guys think about this? Can Geely set a new sales record by the end of the year? I don’t really think so but then again, anything can happen so fingers crossed. Also, when do you guys think Malaysia will be able to upgrade our charging infrastructure enough to make EVs viable as a daily driver?
