Mercedes-Benz CLE replaces the C-Class and E-Class 2-door models.
The Mercedes-Benz CLE has been revealed as an all-new nameplate for the brand. While this is a new model added to the portfolio, it replaces existing models such as the C-Class Coupé, E-Class Coupé as well as the Cabriolet variants of those models. Given that the CLS was also recently discontinued, on the whole Mercedes-Benz is actually significantly reducing the size of its overall product line-up.
The Mercedes-Benz CLE will be available in Europe by the end of the year in coupé form with the cabriolet model coming in 2024. The design is characterized by a long wheelbase, strongly inclined A-Pillar, a short front overhang, a ‘shark nose’, pronounced shoulders and large wheels, all wrapped in the familiar Sensual Purity language.
The CLE’s measurements are as follows:
- 4850mm in length
- 1860mm in width
- 1428mm in height
It shares the same wheelbase as the current C-Class, but is longer overall and offers more rear passenger room than the outgoing C-Class coupé.
The cargo space is also expanded by 60 litres. Compared to the outgoing E-Class coupé, the CLE is just barely longer.
Inside, the CLE gets a 12.3″ free-standing digital instrument display and a 11.9″ infotainment display with the third generation of MBUX. A 64 colour ambient lighting system is integrated and can be optioned to extend from the centre console to the outer air vents.
The front seats receive a exclusive design for the CLE with optional Burmester loudspeakers integrated in the headrests. These seats are collapsed with a Nappa leather loop rather than a lever for the first time on a Mercedes-Benz.
The CLE will be available with a range or four and six cylinder petrol and diesel engines. The CLE 450 4Matic model gets powered by a 3.0L straight six mild hybrid with 381PS & 500Nm of torque with a 9-speed automatic. There are also 2.0L inline four variants available with the CLE 200, CLE 200 4Matic and CLE 300 4Matic. These have outputs of 204PS & 320Nm of torque and 258PS & 400Nm of torque. There’s also a 2.0L four cylinder diesel with 200PS & 440Nm of torque without the option of 4Matic all-wheel drive. A plug-in hybrid model is also being developed with a high pure electric driving range.
There are three chassis variants to choose from with the CLE – lowered comfort suspension, sports suspension with optional amplitude-selective damping. There’s also Dynamic Body Control suspension which can continuously adjust damping. Rear-axle steering is available on the CLE models which can reduce the turning circle by up to 50 cm or turn in the same direction as the front axle at higher speeds for better driving stability at high speeds.
