Three-times Malaysian Super Series (MSS) champion Mok Weng Sun produced a brilliant starting maneuver to win the opening race of the B Series to take the holeshot and virtually run away to victory at Sepang International Circuit (SIC). Fourth in qualifying yesterday, Mok simply burst into the lead at the start after pole sitter Graham Stephenson apparently temporarily choked his Juno machine; holding second-placed Frank Yu and providing the opportunity for Mok to burst away to the first corner. A race slotted as one of the support races for the 2013 Formula 1 Petronas Malaysia Grand Prix had Hong Kong’s Frank Yu in second place and Indonesia’s Bob Irawan Indrasasana in third. Malaysian Tunku Hamman had to be contended with fourth position.
Commenting on the race, Frank said the race was lost at the first corner after he and Indrasasana was affected by the problems encountered by Stephenson’s Juno race car at the start of the race.
Sole lady driver 19-year old Natasha Ida Seatter finished a creditable eighth overall in a grid of 25 drivers especially after spinning her Radical machine on the second lap; but managed to climb up the positions. The Sports Production class was topped by Taiwan’s Steven Chian, who finished 12th overall with a time of 21 minutes 40.966 seconds. Malaysian Alif Hamdan was second in the class with Indonesian Sigit Winarta in third.
Race 2 for the GT and Sports Production classes would be held at 11.10am after the completion of the MSS Series A second race, which would start at 10.20am. Sunday would also feature Race 2 of the GP2 Series, which is scheduled for a 1pm start, and the second race for the Porsche Carrera Cup Asia, which would start its 10-lap battle at 3.30pm.
