McLaren 750S Debuts: Facelift Of 720S, Last Of ICE Models

The McLaren 750S will be the last ICE-powered car from McLaren Automotive.

McLaren Automotive started life with the iconic hybrid P1 and now is inching towards a fully electrified portfolio of supercars. Today, the 720S is being replaced by a facelifted model called the 750S and this has been confirmed as the final McLaren Automotive vehicle to be powered by a pure internal combustion engine.

The McLaren 750S is available as a coupé or convertible (Spider) and is powered by an updated 4.0L V8 twin turbo engine which now outputs 750PS, hence the name. The engine also puts out 800Nm of torque and takes the 750S from 0-100km/h in 2.8 seconds.

The gearbox features optimised gearing and a revised kickdown control strategy. Compared to the 720S, the 750S features 30% new or modified components.

In its lightest spec, the 750S weighs just 1277kg and has a power-to-weight ratio of 586PS per tonne. The 750S Spider comes in 1326kg in its lightest configuration. Weight savings were achieved on many parts, including the wheels, springs, dampers, windscreen, seats and even the driver instrument display, which is now mounted in a binnacle on the steering column.

New to the 750S is McLaren’s 3rd generation Proactive Chassis Control system, which is linked to the hydraulic suspension. The suspension here is softer at the front and stiffer at the rear than on the 720S. Plus the revised vehicle lift system can raise the front in just 4 seconds now, versus 10 second on the 720S.

The steering ratio is now faster and there’s a new power-assistance pump. They’ve also moved the Powertrain and Handling mode controls closer to the steering. Another new feature is the McLaren Control Launcher, essentially allowing the driver to save custom settings.

Apple CarPlay is now present on the new Central Information Screen, along with a new Rear and Surround view camera system.

In terms of looks, this is a facelift, so expect minor differences to the front and rear fascias and bumpers. Up front, the ‘eye scokets’ are narrower and can be body coloured or finished in carbon fibre, and there are new sill air intakes. Around back there are new rear wheelarch vents, a lengthened and reshaped rear deck and a new active rear wing above the central-exit exhaust.

On the 750S Spider, there are glazed flying buttresses that guide air over the rear tonneau and enhance rearward visibility. A Retractable Hard Top with electrochromic glass is also available and can be opened in under 11 seconds up to 50km/h. Inside there are new combinations of Alcantara, Nappa leather, TechLux and Performance interiors to choose from as well as a new Bowers & Wilkins system with Continuum cone speakers.

Tiptronic Gearbox

The McLaren 750S comes with a 3-year vehicle warranty and a three-year scheduled maintenance/service plan as standard. An extended warranty can be purchased for the 750S until it’s 15 years old.
