New Ford Ranger Wildtrak X Is A Step Below The Raptor For Australia

The Australia-exclusive Ford Ranger Wildtrak X is wider and taller.

Say what you want about Ford’s passenger car department, few can deny that they’re pushing the limits of the pick-up truck market. First came the Wildtrak, which was the flagship variant with a unique cosmetic package.

Later on, the Ranger Raptor was added and this gave consumers a taste of Baja-ready performance thanks to Fox Shocks, large off-road wheels and other performance enhancements.

Now, Ford is creating a new variant to bridge the gap between these two top-tier Rangers and it’s called ‘Wildtrak X’. To be fair, this is not the first Wildtrak X ever. Ford Australia had another Wildtrak X, but that was on the previous generation Ranger and had a different set of upgrades.

The Wildtrak X takes the fundamental package of the current Ranger Wildtrak while adding a wider track, more ground clearance and lots of other goodies. That does mean you get the 2.0L 4-cylinder turbo diesel instead of the 6-cylinder petrol engine.

Both the front and rear tracks of the Wildtrak X are 30mm wider than they are on the standard Wildtrak. The Wildtrak X has also been fitted with Bilstein dampers and its ride height has been raised by 26mm. Towing capacity is still 3500kg. The Wildtrak X gets a new 17″ wheel wrapped in 265/70 R17 General Grabber AT3 all-terrain tyres.

To enhance the off-roading package, the Wildtrak X also gets Rock Crawl and the Trail Control system – low-speed cruise control for when you’re not on tarmac.

Non-performance related upgrades include a unique front grille design fitted with auxiliary LEDs, which is something the previous Ranger Wildtrak X also brought. The X now also brings cast aluminium side steps and adds the following options as standard:

  • matrix LED headlights
  • sliding load rack
  • folding roof rack
  • B&O sound system
  • 12.4″ digital instrument cluster

The Ford Ranger Wildtrak X is available only in Cyber Orange paint with black badges providing some contrast. Even though it comes from the same plant in Thailand as our Ranger, we wouldn’t expect it to turn up for sale here.
