The Great Wall King Kong Cannon pickup truck is also available with a 6AT
The Great Wall King Kong Cannon is an affordable Chinese pickup truck from Great Wall Motor (GWM) under the brand’s “cannon” or “Poer” lineup depending on which market it is sold in and is a good example of the brand ingenuity. It is also available in both petrol and diesel engines and four-wheel drive.
It was launched in early 2022, with one major drawback. It was only offered with a 6-speed manual gearbox. Well, one year later and now GWM has finally launched the Great Wall King Kong Cannon pickup truck with a 6-speed automatic transmission. Overall, the changes are minor between the new automatic version and the original.
As far as looks go, the Great Wall King Kong Cannon is definitely not one of the most eye-catching pickup trucks but it looks pretty all right. The car features a huge chrome grille, large trapeze-shaped headlights, wide wheel arches and thin tyres with very generic looking rims.
Moreover, while the Great Wall King Kong Cannon comes as standard as a double cab, it can be had in either a short or long wheelbase model. The former wheelbase model measures 5,365mm long, 1,880wide and 1,815mm tall with a wheelbase of 3,140mm and a bed size measuring 1,550mm long, 1,500mm wide and 495mm deep.
Meanwhile the long wheelbase model of the Great Wall King Kong Cannon measures 5,635mm long, 1,880mm wide and 1,815mm long with a wheelbase of 3,410mm and a bed size measuring 1820mm in length, 1500mm in width and 495mm in depth. The load capacity, however, in both versions is only 500kg.
On top of that, the interior of the Great Wall King Kong Cannon is simple and minimalistic which is rare for newer Chinese vehicles but the best part about this interior is the fact that there are physical buttons in the centre and the centre infotainment screen is also an add-on option.
The petrol version of the Great Wall King Kong Cannon features a 2 litre turbocharged engine making 190hp and 360Nm of torque and has a century sprint time of 9.5 or 9.9 seconds, depending on whether it is rear-wheel drive or four-wheel drive. As for the diesel version, it is also a 2-liter turbocharged unit making 163hp and 400Nm of torque and accelerates from 0 to 100km/h in either 8.5 or 8.9 seconds.
As standard, the Great Wall King Kong Cannon is rear-wheel drive and can be optionally had in four-wheel drive and the automatic variant is sold for RMB97,800 to 120,800 (about USD14,200 to 17,500) which is preferable to the manual variant which goes for RMB95,800 to 125,800 (roughly USD13,900 to 18,250 USD).
So what do you guys think of the Great Wall King Kong Cannon? Would you choose this pickup truck over the much more expensive options if the car were sold here in Malaysia?
