What Is The Battery Replacement Price For Your EV?

Not just EV, even plug-in hybrid manufacturers were reluctant to share the battery replacement prices with us.

Despite the limited penetration of electric vehicles before Covid-19, the trend towards electrification of road passenger transport (cars, bikes, busses and even trucks) is gaining significance right now, especially in 2023 as more countries around the world implement measures to reduce carbon, particulate, and other emissions.

Some of the major milestones are already in place. For example, France will ban all petrol and diesel vehicles by 2040, while Athens, Madrid, and Mexico City have announced plans to ban all diesel cars and vans by 2025. China and India are also considering electric vehicle targets.

Meanwhile, nobody is addressing the ‘elephant in the room’, which is the cost of battery replacement after the vehicle warranty ends.

If your vehicle is outside of the warranty, you will need to pay for the battery replacement.

Rewind a few years and some of you will remember the plug-in hybrid craze that put thousands of shiny new premium vehicles on Malaysian roads.

Interestingly, as the years progressed, some of these plug-in hybrids had battery issues and even some mild hybrid vehicles were seeing battery failures.

Now, there were some hybrid vehicle battery replacement prices as high as RM85,000, which slowly moved downwards.

In 2015 when the Audi A6 Hybrid was selling beyond expectations no buyers worried about the battery replacement cost. Then in 2019 when one owner had to replace his battery, we managed to get the price confirmed.

Audi Malaysia shared with us the recommended retail price which was in 2019 for the A6 hybrid battery a whopping RM48,000. (please note that prices vary yearly according to currency exchange and raw material costs)

Later in 2018 we managed to get the official battery replacement prices for Toyota and Lexus vehicles. They were as follows.

  • Toyota Prius battery replacement price is just RM6,680.00
  • Lexus CT200 battery replacement price is just also RM6,680.00 (since its shares its technology with the Prius.
  • Toyota Priuc C…the compact Prius, battery replacement price is just RM6,010.00.
  • Toyota Camry Hybrid battery replacement price is just RM8,700.00.

(please note that prices vary yearly according to currency exchange and raw material costs)

Honda Malaysia also shared their mild hybrid battery replacement costs with us in 2013 which was as follows.

  • Honda Insight battery replacement price is just RM3,980.00
  • Honda Jazz Hybrid battery replacement price is just also RM3,980.00 (since its shares its technology with the Insight
  • Honda CR-Z MMC…the compact hatchback, battery replacement price is RM5,480.00 and the older CR-Z just RM3,980.00
  • Honda Civic Hybrid battery replacement price is just RM5,480.00

(please note that prices vary yearly according to currency exchange and raw material costs)

So, what is the replacement battery cost for the bigger and denser batteries in a plug-in hybrid vehicle (PHEV)?

Well, in early 2019 BMW Malaysia shared a price of one battery module is RM7,300 and depending on which BMW PHEV you drive, they have 5-6 modules in one battery pack. So, you are looking at a possible total replacement cost of between RM36,500 to RM43,800 if you need a complete battery change.

(please note that prices vary yearly according to currency exchange and raw material costs)

Volvo battery pricing is very close to BMW’s and so is Mercedes-Benz. So what about full electric vehicles which much bigger batteries? Can we guesstimate a price of RM80k to RM99k perhaps?

Well, a quick search online and we found information on verifythis.com that shares the price for a battery replacement for a Tesla Model 3 or Model S could cost between USD12,000 and USD15,000 (RM53,000 to RM66,000 before installation costs).

Meanwhile, the price of a replacement battery for a 2021 Mustang Mach-E is just over USD23,000 (a whopping RM101,000).

So, what will happen to the used values of PHEV’s and electric vehicles in the coning years after the manufacturers warranty. Or even worse, private imported electric vehicles from AP holders with no factory warranty …. how?
