Upcoming Porsche Macan Electric Rumours And Confirmed Facts

Here’s what’s known about the upcoming Porsche Macan Electric.

An all-electric Porsche Macan has been in development for some time and many potential customers are eagerly awaiting any bit of information they can get. This is the first time the Macan is being fully-revised since it first debuted back in 2014. Since then, the Macan has grown to be one of the company’s best selling products, serving as an effective ‘spiritual successor’ to the Porsche 924, albeit in 5-door crossover form. An electric Macan would not be without competition. Globally, there’s already the Tesla Model Y, Audi Q6 e-tron and Genesis GV60 to contend. In Malaysia, Porsche will have to fend off the BMW iX and iX3, the Mercedes-Benz EQC and soon the Jaguar i-Pace.

Of course, there are some things that Porsche can do that none of these other brands can offer. That is why there are still so many in the upper echelons of society who are still holding off on buying the above-mentioned electric compact SUVs.

Performance Of The New Macan EV

This new Macan EV is being built on the Premium Platform Electric 800V architecture, which already underpins many other Volkswagen Group vehicles. As usual, Porsche refuses to compromise on their engineering, so extensive modifications have been made to achieve an ideal weight balance that is slightly rear-biased.

The upcoming premium electric crossover will feature a rear axle steering system as well as a completely revised double wishbone suspension set up that will help to make sure the additional weight of the 100kWh battery pack doesn’t stop it from being the sportiest car in its segment. 270kW DC fast charging should give up to 80% of charge in under half an hour by effectively charging the battery pack as two separate units in parallel.

It’s likely there will be a single motor rear wheel drive Macan as well as a dual motor all-wheel drive variant. Power figures are likely to be class leading – in excess of 600PS and 1,000 Nm of torque at launch.

Design of the New Porsche Macan EV

From spyshots of heavily camoflaged cars, it’s clear that the new new Macan isn’t breaking the mould. The original Macan is still one of the best looking vehicles on the road today. The new one will take the same silhouette and work in some unique styling changes. Some of the design elements first seen on the Mission E Concept and Taycan will find their way into the new Macan EV, particularly with regards to the shape of the headlights.

Some other changes include split headlamps, a lower central hood and flush mounted glass, though the door handles will still be conventional and not flush-mounted. One major change comes in the form of the tailgate spoiler, which is now mounted below the rear glass instead of on top. It looks like this tailgate spoiler will be retractable at lower speeds or when the Macan EV isn’t moving. The taillamp strip that stretches across the rear of many other modern Porsches makes an appearance here as well. The side silhouette reveals a potentially different glasshouse shape.

Inside too, you can expect a taste of the Taycan. The new curved digital driver instrument cluster sits behind a new 3-spoke steering wheel. There will be two other screens for entertainment and other vehicle functions. Despite the increase in the number of digital displays, Porsche has found a way to still include an analogue clock in the centre of the dashboard. There’s a mix of digital and capacitive buttons on the dash. The gear selector mechanism has yet to be shown.
