McLaren has run Honda’s new Formula 1 power unit on track for the first time during a filming day at Silverstone recently. The Japanese V6 turbo engine and associated hybrid system was fitted to a modified 2014 specification McLaren chassis dubbed the MP4-29H 1×1 and fired up for the first time in the car on Wednesday ahead of the test run on Friday. Few exact details of the test are know but it is thought that the car completed almost all of the 100km allowed by the sporting regulations, with a single stoppage on track. It is expected that McLaren will now use the Honda power unit for at least part of the upcoming test in Abu Dhabi. Honda is returning to Formula 1 in 2015 for the first time since it unexpectedly quit the sport in 2009.
