The Golf Mk6 arrived in 2008 with big shoes to fill. It had to better the very popular Mk5 and so Volkswagen engineers pushed the segment boundaries with the Mk6 making this all new Golf compete with cars more expensive and exclusive. In just 4 years, a further 2.85 million units of the VW Golf had been produced and sold around the world.
This 6th generation of the car was launched in 2008 and once again safety made great advances, too: the car body, again laser-welded, was so robust that it passed the EuroNCAP crash test with flying colours, gaining the maximum 5-stars. There was now also a further airbag fitted as standard: the driver’s knee airbag. This was the safest car in its class.
In respect of quality the Golf Mk6’s interior in particular ranked as pioneering with high quality fit, finish and materials. Meanwhile the very popular TSI engines produced lower fuel consumption and the chassis delivered more dynamic handling and comfort.
New assistance systems such as Light Assist automatic main beam management, ParkAssist, hill start assistant and technologies such as electronic DCC dynamic chassis control awarded the Mk6 Golf the ‘World Car of the Year 2009’ award. This was the most advanced VW Golf to date. Also available were features such as dynamic cornering lights and LED rear light clusters. Even if the Golf Mk6 has now been topped by the Mk7, its outstanding product features and superb design will ensure that the sixth generation Volkswagen Golf remains – as a used car too – one of the most successful cars on the market for many a year to come.
