This Brand pioneered Electromobility 50 Years Ago!

Despite booming in popularity a few years ago, electromobility was already invented in 1972

BMW Electromobility

When one thinks about the word electromobility they would think of the sudden boom in electric cars which started around 5 to 10 years ago, but what if I told you the German Giant, BMW already pioneered it in 1972?

Well, it’s true, BMW already had electromobility vehicles purpose built to be long-distance support and camera cars during the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich with two converted BMW 1602 cars.

That’s pretty impressive considering that BMW now has 10 electromobility vehicles across 6 model lines in the first half of 2022. This once again shows us that many advancements in the automotive industry were pioneered by BMW.

BMW electromobility leveled up further in 1969 when the company built two more test vehicles based on the 2 series, so if one really thinks about it, electromobility was already invented 50 years ago, we just didn’t have a need for it yet.

Moreover, the converted BMW 1602 electric cars had a range of around 60km and a top speed of around 100km/h. While these numbers are severely lacking by today’s standards, it is a testament to the innovation BMW strives for.

On top of that, by pioneering electromobility, BMW has proven its prowess in other respects as well. I’m honestly always amazed at how good BMW is at almost everything while also being the first to introduce these features and systems.

Electromobility is only one part of the BMW 360° sustainability approach which covers the entire value chain from raw material extraction, to production and recycling and ensures sustainability in all aspects.

A goal like this would have been considered unachievable 50 years ago when BMW first started what would become electromobility today, but just like with everything else BMW has aimed to do, they always achieve it.

This is in line with BMW’s goals to use resources responsibly and reduce their carbon footprint and by 2050, BMW aims to be completely carbon-neutral across the entire value chain.

Once again, we have BMW to thank for this as arguably, electromobility probably would have taken longer to advance if it wasn’t for BMW and their innovation half a century ago, as the saying goes “the journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.”

What do you think? Is electromobility only where it is today because of BMW? Click the link here to find out more about the BMW electromobility journey as told by BMW.
