Triumph releases prototype of the new TE-1 Electric motorcycle following it’s completion
Triumph is proud to announce that their latest development project, the TE-1 Electric Motorcycle is now officially complete and have released their first prototype.
With test results of the prototype exceeding objectives and expectations alike, this motorcycle is shaping up to be a huge success.
This projects was designed to be a creative development in specialist electric motorcycle engineering and is a unique collaboration between Triumph Motorcycles, Williams Advanced Engineering, Integral Powertrain Ltd and WMG of the University of Warwick and is funded by the Office of Zero Emission Vehicles through Innovative UK.
The extreme live testing programme involving endless performance assessments both on the road on on track was integral to setting up the calibration of the TE-1 prototype which has exceeded all target objectives.
Keeping up with the theme of exceeding objectives, the TE-1 has a riding range far ahead of any equivalent electric motorcycle today.
With it’s project developed battery achieving all energy capacity goals, official testing has shown the motorcycle to be capable of a 161km/ 100 mile range.
This coupled with the successful regenerative braking feature being implemented, with room for further optimization and greater efficiency in the motorcycle generator and transmission, means that the motorcycle could even reach a higher range in the future.
Despite being an electric motorcycle, the TE-1 has similar performance to the current Speed Triple 1200 motorcycle and an even faster century sprint time. Official test results put the TE-1 0 to 60mph time at 3.6 seconds and the 0 to 100 mph time at 6.2 seconds.
Equipped with a 130kw battery, this beast puts out 177ps/175bhp peak power and 109Nm (80 lb-ft) of peak torque.
To find the maximum potential of the TE-1, Brandon Paasch, Daytona 200 champion racer was brought in during the final testing phase. He helped with engine performance evaluation and and the final set up for the prototype.
Brandon said, “The throttle response on the TE-1 is kind of incredible, it’s very torquey and when you first touch the throttle it’s instant power, which is obviously what I love as a motorcycle racer – I love when it’s super-torquey and picks up right away, so for me it was a really great experience.”
“I got to peg this thing all the way from zero to 100 percent throttle and it’s unbelievably quick, it pulls like crazy.” He added.
Add in a 220 kg overall weight lighter than any other equivalent motorcycle out there, a 20 minute charge time that will take the motorcycle from 0 to 80 percent, Triumph’s signature thrilling handling and hair raising sound and add it to an instantly recognizable motorcycle and you have what could very well be the future today.
