The driver of this mangled Defender managed to survive with only minor injuries.
With so many fatal road accidents happening every year, it’s always a good idea to get your car regularly serviced and keep it well maintained to avoid technical issues that could lead to accidents, but what happens if despite all the precautions one can take, they still run into technical issues?
We were shared this from Facebook a few days ago when a classic Defender owner was driving along in Johor Bahru and had a very scary encounter when he realized his steering wheel had suddenly stopped working.
This came as a shock as it was confirmed by the brother of the Defender driver that the vehicle was well maintained and fully serviced.
The vehicle was cruising at around 78 to 80 km/h when the accident happened and the Defender driver was lucky to have escaped with only minor injuries. The driver stated that the steering wheel of the car had completely lost control and that the vehicle could not be turned even when turning the steering wheel.
While it is still unclear exactly why this happened, it is believed that there was an issue with the steering shaft linkage. Once again, this Defender was well maintained and fully serviced so something like this should not have happened in the first place.
A source tells us that while the driver did survive with only minor injuries and is okay, he is understandably quite shaken.
Meanwhile road accidents are traumatizing enough but when something so unexpected and completely out of one’s control like this happens, it rattles the mind just a bit more.
The driver’s brother also shared a message letting us know that some minor details about the accident such as how the steering wheel had lost control, the speed the vehicle was travelling and that the driver is totally fine and only suffered minor injuries.
So don’t wait around if you know your car is due for servicing and don’t forget to regularly have your car checked as well. It’s not enough to simply replace your brake pads and tyres every now and then. You need to ensure that every part of your car is in tip top condition.
Another thing we can all do is to quickly do a quick check of all essential functions in our car before driving, such as checking the amount of petrol left in the tank, the signal indicators, whether the steering wheel is responsive, if the tyres have enough air and so on. Remember to always stay safe on the road, Malaysia.
