The Mercedes-EQS SUV brings the luxury of the S-Class into an electric SUV form.
Mercedes-Benz is pushing hard to enter the electric vehicles space with at least 8 fully-electric vehicles by the end of this year. They’ve already shown the EQC, EQA, EQV, EQE, and EQS Sedan. Today, they’re unveiling the first model that officially breaks their new EQ nomenclature – the EQS SUV. As the name suggests, this is the EQS in the form of an SUV, so there’s increased ride height, ground clearance and room for 7 in this luxurious behemoth.
In terms of size, the EQS SUV shares its 3210mm wheelbase with the EQS Sedan. However, the EQS SUV is taller by 200mm, wider by 33mm, and about the same length from bumper to bumper (-1mm). This overall increase in size has been used to fit 2 individual seats in a third row.
The EQS SUV shares many aerodynamic measures with its 4-door sibling, which is the more aerodynamic production car in the world.
There are 3 powertrain options available for the EQS SUV. The basic version is rear-wheel drive only, but two 4MATIC versions add an electric drive train to the front axle. The 4MATIC models also come with Torque Shift, which allows for variable distribution of drive torque between the front and rear wheels for best efficiency.
Despite that, it is the rear-wheel drive model with the overall best energy efficiency and range. All electric drive trains in the EQS SUV are of the permanently excited synchronous motor (PSM) variety.
The front axle of the EQS SUV features a four-link axle while the rear gets independent multi-link suspension. AIRMATIC air suspension is standard with continuously adjustable damping (ADS+). There is rear-axle steering for better mobility in city and over land.
The EQS SUV comes with Trailer Manoeuvring Assist and MBUX Augmented Reality Navigation software features that can be activated AFTER purchasing the vehicle. An additional 10 degrees of steering angle is also available as an optional software download.
In terms of safety, the Mercedes EQS SUV has a rigid passenger cell, special deformation zones and the latest restraint systems. In Europe, the EQS SUV can detect if the rear seats are actually occupied and warn the driver if seat belts are not fastened specific to each seat. It will also remind the driver of an overlooked child or occupant upon leaving the vehicle.
Inside, the Mercedes-EQS SUV features the same MBUX Hyperscreen as the EQS Sedan which spans the entirety of the dashboard. The Hyperscreen places OLED displays under a common cover glass and merges visually. There’s also a Doby Atmos sound system for the best-in-class studio mix possible in-car with a 360-degree audio experience.
