Mazda2 In 2014 Will Come With Skyactiv

Mazda, looking to make the most of its new, lightweight Skyactiv vehicle architecture, will use a version of the CX-5 crossover’s platform to underpin its next-generation Mazda2 hatchback. Of course, the Mazda2 is a much smaller vehicle than its larger CUV stablemate, so some serious chopping will no doubt be in order when it comes time to engineer the replacement for the company’s smallest hatch. Based on the increased demand for more power and more fuel efficiency in the sub-compact class, we expect the replacement of the current model to be introduced onto the U.S. market with an efficient but vigorous 1.3L SkyActiv engine. We have also heard that Mazda is working on a redesign of the body to make it lighter than before, which should further enhance performance and efficiency. When all is said and done, we could be looking at a big leap in performance, with a SkyActiv-G 1.3L 4-cylinder engine will have an ultra-high compression ratio of 14.0:1 and features both direct-injection and dual sequential valve timing system to achieve 8hp at 5400 rpm and 83 lb-ft of torque at 4000 rpm. Mated to a CVT transmission and an updated start-stop system, fuel economy for the new engine is rated at 70 mpg on the Japanese test cycle.

Along with the body redesign, Mazda will be updating the interior of the Mazda2 for 2014 to add more back row space for maximum comfort, as well as an exciting new list of standard and optional features. Some of the new standard technology we can look for in the 2014 model include Bluetooth, as well as an integrated entertainment and navigation system.

Currently, the CX-5 and the sleek new Mazda6 share many of the same platform components, and this architecture will already be scaled down to support the next-generation Mazda3 sedan and hatchback, which will debut later this year.
