The EV also took the World Electric Vehicle of the Year and World Car Design of the Year awards
Since its global launch in February 2021, the Hyundai IONIQ 5 has been conferred numerous international accolades including German Car of the Year, which it won back in November. The recently held World Car Awards ceremony saw the all-electric crossover add three more titles under its belt, namely World Car of the Year, World Electric Vehicle of the Year and World Car Design of the Year.
The battery electric vehicle (BEV) was recognized by a jury of 102 automotive journalists from 33 countries around the world. It was chosen from an initial entry list of 28 vehicles, which was then narrowed down to 10 finalists consisting of the Kia EV6, Ford Mustang Mach-E, Audi Q4 e-tron, Cupra Formentor, Genesis G70, Honda Civic, Hyundai Tucson, Lexus NX and the Toyota GR86/Subaru BRZ twins.
Built on Hyundai’s first dedicated BEV platform, the Electric-Global Modular Platform (E-GMP), the IONIQ 5 boasts the 800V ultra-fast charging architecture that allows for a 10 to 80 percent charge in just 18 minutes as well as the Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) technology with an output of 3.6 kW to power appliances and tools. When equipped with two-wheel drive and up to 77.4-kWh battery, the IONIQ 5 is capable of covering up to 480 km on a single charge, according to the WLTP standard.
“We are truly honored to receive these prestigious awards, which recognize the talent and hard work of all our people and business partners at Hyundai Motor Company. Our vision is to enable Progress for Humanity, and this endorsement of our approach will serve to embolden our commitment to make this vision a reality,” said Jaehoon Chang, President and CEO of Hyundai Motor Company.
In Malaysia, the IONIQ 5 is offered three specifications – Lite, Plus and Max – with prices ranging from RM199,888 to RM259,888. The IONIQ 5 Lite and IONIQ 5 Plus are rear-wheel drive models with a smaller 58 kWh battery pack that returns 384 km of range, while the IONIQ 5 Max comes with two motors (making it an all-wheel-drive model) and a 72.6 kWh battery pack that offers a range of up to 430 km. The car reportedly received more than 200 bookings since its launch.
