It will first be offered with a four-cylinder petrol engine, followed by six-cylinder petrol and diesel engines later on
Four months on from the unveiling of the CX-50, Mazda’s SUV offensive continues with the all-new CX-60. Apart from being the automaker’s first ever vehicle with a plug-in hybrid powertrain, it is also the first of two new models from the Large Product group to be introduced throughout Europe during the next two years.
The CX-60 is underpinned by Mazda’s Skyactiv Multi-Solution Scalable Architecture, which is designed to be compatible with its longitudinal front-engine rear-wheel drive layout. Initially, the CX-60 will be offered with the new e-Skyactiv PHEV powertrain, which comprises a Skyactiv-G 2.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine with an electric motor and a 17.8 kWh lithium-ion battery.
The engine, which is also found in the CX-5, develops 192 PS and 261 Nm, while the electric motor delivers 135 PS (100 kW) and 250 Nm of torque from zero rpm. This combination delivers a total system output of 327 PS (241 kW) and 500 Nm, making the CX-60 the most powerful road car Mazda has ever produced.
With an eight-speed automatic transmission and i-Activ All-Wheel Drive system, the CX-60 is capable of doing the 0-100 km/h sprint in just 5.8 seconds, before reaching a top speed of 200 km/h. On electricity alone, the SUV can cover up to 63 km running at 100 km/h or less.
Later on, there will be two six-cylinder versions – a 3.0-litre e-Skyactiv X petrol and a 3.3-litre Skyactiv-D diesel – with two different power outputs and Mazda’s 48V mild hybrid system called M Hybrid Boost. Like the four-cylinder model, these versions get an eight-speed automatic transmission and i-Activ AWD but they may also be equipped with rear-wheel drive only.
Drive modes are accessible via the Mi-Drive Mazda Intelligent Drive Select system that offers five switchable modes – Normal, Sport, Off-Road, Towing and EV (PHEV only). Speaking of driving, the Skyactiv Multi-Solution Scalable Architecture features numerous enhancements including Kinematic Posture Control (KPC), which facilitates smooth body movement and stable cornering even at high speeds.
Design-wise, the CX-60 marks an evolution of the Kodo design philosophy with a remarkably long bonnet and short rear end. The newly designed stacked headlights feature an L-shaped lighting signature, which is repeated at the rear on the taillights, while the wing on the front grille is now illuminated to further accentuate its bold look.
Inside, you’ll be greeted by a generous application of natural wood grain, maple wood trim and high quality woven textile, as well as a horizontally symmetrical cockpit layout centred on the driver. Speaking of which, the area features a 12.3-inch full TFT-LCD driver’s instrument cluster, a large window Head-up Display (HUD) and a 12.3-inch infotainment centre display.
A comprehensive range of advanced i-Activsense driver assistance systems are onboard to keep everything in check. There are also several new features, including the new See-Through View function, essentially a 360-degree monitor with extended field of view at low speeds, Hill Descent Control (HDC), Cruise Control (i-ACC) with Traffic Sign Recognition and Vehicle Exit Warning.
